Position Summary

The Canvass Supervisor provides strategic leadership for Memphis Artists for Change's field canvassing program. This position oversees multiple canvassing teams, ensuring high-quality voter and community engagement while meeting organizational goals for conversations, surveys, volunteer recruitment, leadership identification, and campaign actions.

The Canvass Supervisor is responsible for hiring, training, coaching, scheduling, quality assurance, data management, and performance accountability. This role spends time both in the office planning operations and in the field supporting teams.

Essential Responsibilities

Program Leadership

• Oversee daily operations of all canvassing activities.

• Develop weekly and monthly field plans that align with campaign goals.

• Establish daily goals for conversations, surveys, volunteer recruitment, and leadership identification.

• Ensure canvassing operations reflect MAC's organizing values and community-centered approach.

Staff Supervision

• Directly supervise Canvassers

• Recruit, interview, hire, and onboard canvassing staff.

• Conduct regular coaching sessions and performance evaluations.

• Develop improvement plans when necessary.

• Foster a positive, accountable team culture.

Training & Development

• Design and facilitate canvasser training.

• Train staff in:

  • Community organizing

  • Active listening

  • De-escalation

  • Data collection

  • Survey administration

  • Storytelling

  • Safety protocols

  • Leadership development

Field Operations

• Approve turf assignments and daily routes.

• Conduct field visits to observe and coach teams.

• Ensure proper materials, technology, and logistics are available.

• Monitor quality of conversations and adherence to scripts.

Data & Reporting

• Monitor daily field metrics.

• Review canvassing data for quality and completeness.

• Prepare weekly reports for campaign leadership.

• Analyze trends and recommend strategy improvements.

Community Representation

• Represent MAC professionally within neighborhoods.

• Build relationships with community leaders and partners.

• Address concerns raised by residents.

• Ensure canvassing reflects respect, dignity, and cultural competence.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree preferred (or equivalent experience)

• 3–5 years of canvassing, organizing, outreach, or campaign experience

• Minimum 2 years supervising staff

• Experience using voter files or CRM systems preferred

• Strong leadership and coaching ability

• Excellent communication skills

• Ability to manage multiple priorities

As a key representative of our organization, you'll energize voters, foster meaningful conversations, and help shape the future of civic engagement. We are looking for canvassers in Memphis and Shelby County. .

Responsibilities

• Conduct door-to-door canvassing to educate residents about upcoming elections, initiatives, or ballot measures

• Engage with community members through friendly, informative conversations to build awareness and support

• Utilize strong communication skills to clearly explain campaign messages and answer questions

• Assist in organizing events or rallies to boost campaign visibility and voter participation

• Enter voter contact data into miniVAN

• Maintain detailed records of interactions, voter responses, and campaign activities for reporting purposes

Qualifications:

• Previous experience in supervising teams or leading outreach efforts is a plus

• Strong background in marketing, customer service, sales, or telemarketing enhances your ability to connect effectively

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to negotiate and persuade convincingly

• Experience in door-to-door canvassing or grassroots campaigning is preferred

• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in fast-paced environments

• Passion for civic engagement, politics, or community service is highly valued

Working Conditions:

• Canvassers must be prepared to work in all types of weather, complete light physical activities such as standing or walking for long periods of time.

• May infrequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

• Must be able to read a map.

• Ability to walk for at least 4 hours daily to canvass door-to-door.

• Reliable transportation to and from the staging location will be required.
